The Healing Power of Reiki
By now most people have heard of the healing modality Reiki. However you may not fully understand it’s purpose or benefits. When you look at health through a holistic view it is important to address mind, body and spirit. Reiki helps us to tap into a power in ourselves that can actually be used to heal and improve our own health and others if desired.
Reiki is an alternative medicine therapy that applies the method of biofield therapy. Reiki translates to “Universal Life Force Energy”. This hands on healing technique was founded in Japan. It has been used worldwide for thousands of years to address ailments such as addictions, weight, aches and pain, biochemical and hormonal imbalances, reducing blood pressure and heart rate, improving the immune system, helping with cancer issues, just to name a few. Reiki can help to create joy within the body and provide a feeling of relaxations and peace.
Initially a person receiving Reiki will need to have an attunement by a Reiki Master in order to create an open “channel” for life energy to flow. Once attuned, there is potential for healing the physical body by creating an unlimited channel that allows an individual to tap into their own energy to heal their body and spirit. Depending on the patient, Reiki treatments have been known to show results immediately or over a period of extended time.
Once an individual is trained and certified by a Reiki Master-Teacher, they can administer healing treatments on themselves, other people, animals and even plants. Anyone who is open to the idea of spiritual energies can take classes to become a Master-Teacher in Reiki. By learning the techniques of Reiki it empowers one to have the ability toapply self-healing on themselves and loved ones.

Frank Grad is a health and fitness enthusiast who walks his talk. Frank came into this world with a strong desire to know and understand how things work. Tips to Prevent Packing on the Pounds this Holiday Season
With the Holiday season kicking off next week we thought it might be helpful to have some tips to help prevent overindulging this season.
1. Make sure to have a high protein breakfast like egg whites and fruit or a protein shake and have a small snack a couple hours before your Holiday meal. This will keep you from becoming ravenous before the big meal and overeating before your brain can send the signal that you are in fact full.
2. Consider an extra workout the morning of or night before the Holiday. Many gyms have special 90 mins workout classes the week or day of a Holiday. This will help keep your metabolism high and give you some extra room for additional caloric intake.
Many towns hold 3 to 5 mile races the day of Thanksgiving to help benefit food pantries. Running or walking in a charitable race not only helps to keep your waist trim, but you are also putting food on a plate in need.
3. Remember what the Holidays are really about. Holiday time is highly associated with yummy food. By focusing on the true meaning and importance of the holidays rather than associating it with food can help take some of the enticement away from that holiday pie. Try to shift Holiday focus on to the story and meaning behind the Holiday as well as together time with your family and friends.
4. Fill the majority of your plate with figure flattering options. Choose leaner cuts of meat and vegetable options as the base of your plate and leave ¼ of the plate for something that will make your taste buds smile.
5. Most important to remember is that the Holidays are only a few days not a couple months. Many people overindulge all Holiday season long and then follow-it up with the classic New Year’s resolution of losing the Holiday weight gain. There is nothing wrong with letting your self have something yummy on the Holidays, however if you have this mentality from Thanksgiving all the way to New Years you will have some trouble fitting into your jeans come Valentine’s Day.

In my clinical experience, to stay healthy, in addition to a healthy diet and active life, the supplemental nutrition foundation for every infant, child, adult and senior is to take: Juice Plus, Vineyard Blend, Vitamin D3, Fish Oil and maybe a calcium supplement.
1) The 2 red, 2 green or 2 purple capsules of Juice Plus and Vineyard Blend provide: an explosion of whole food nutrients you need/day, has 22 peer reviewed medical studies using the capsules in humans to change the biochemistry of multiple factors in the body, fills the gap in fruits and vegetables (7-17 raw, tree ripened fruits and veggies/day) that we are not eating every day, has 11 studies proving it is bio-available (gets into the blood stream) and acts basically as “body insurance”.
2) The D3 acts as a hormone for protecting bones, moods, heart and autoimmune health. Infants and children should be supplemented with at least 400 IU without a blood test and adults should take 1,000-2,000 IU without a blood test. With the proper blood test the dose can range from 400 IU-20,000 IU/day. The correct blood test to ask for is called 25 hydroxy D3. Minimal ideal levels are 50-100, if you have certain conditions like osteopenia your optimal levels may be 75-100.
3) Fish oil with the right EPA and DHA balance provides essential fatty acids for cognitive functioning and anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is what triggers the start of most disease. There are about 6 excellent brands on the market and highly recommend #1 Nordic Natural’s, #2 Ortho Molecular or #3 Omega 3’s. Get 1,000-1,200 mg of EPA and DHA and up to 2,000-4,000 mg for certain conditions like high triglycerides (but with a health professional’s advisement.)
4) Calcium is over rated. Some people need a supplement some do not. Foods, fortified soy, rice and almond milk, greens, the Complete Shake (450 mg of Calcium per scoop) are the optimal sources. If a personal has bone loss they should get 1,000-1,200 mg of calcium citrate from a supplement pill and or preferably from a combination of foods, shakes and pills.

How to Cover your vitamin D needs:
Daylight savings time is fast approaching, and when the clocks fall back so will your daily dose of sunshine. Sunlight has long been associated with levels of vitamin D, a compound that plays an essential role in bone health. Over time, minimal sunlight can lead to vitamin D deficiencies resulting in weakened bones and fatigue. Decreased sunlight, however, does not make maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D impossible. Valerie Early, RD, offers alternative ways to ensure that you get the proper amount of vitamin D:
- FOOD – While one should not depend on food to get a sufficient amount of vitamin D, it is still a useful source. Vitamin D can be found in milk and fatty fishes such as salmon or tuna. You can also look for foods fortified with Vitamin D such as certain soy milks, breakfast cereals, orange juice, and margarine.
- SUPPLEMENTS – Supplements are your best bet for getting enough vitamin D. Multivitamins can be used, but check that it has the correct type of vitamin D (cholecalciferol).
- GET TESTED – The amount of vitamin D that each person needs can vary. For example, people age 50 and older, people with lactose intolerance, people with darker skin, and people who are obese may be more prone to vitamin D deficiency. Check in with your doctor and ask for a blood test to ensure that you are working toward the correct number.
Remember to be watchful for symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency over the winter months. Symptoms include chronic backache, depression, hypertension, weight gain and rickets, and can develop into more serious diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Vitamin D is also shown to lessen the risk of developing certain cancers, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and hypertension, so the importance of keeping your vitamin D levels up even in the winter months is of utmost importance.
